Vesicoamniotic Shunts

Fetal and Neonatal Alloimmune Thrombocytopenia (NAIT or FNAIT), occurs in approximately 1:1000 to 1:10,000 births.

This condition results from the presence of maternal antibodies against paternal platelet antigen (Human Placental Antigen, HPA-1a).

Treatment of fetuses with lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO) involves the placement of a vesicoamniotic shunt. Physicians at The Fetal Institute have developed techniques that minimize the number of procedures required to effectively drain the fetal bladder. As such, patients with LUTO have the highest chance of survival and improved renal function than in any other center.

Pyeloamniotic shunts (shunts between the renal pelvis and the amniotic cavity) and peritoneoamnitoic shunts (shunts between the fetal peritoneal cavity and the amniotic cavity) are also performed in very selected cases.

The procedures are done in the Hospital in the main Operating Room, under maximum antiseptic technique.
