Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)

Fetal and Neonatal Alloimmune Thrombocytopenia (NAIT or FNAIT), occurs in approximately 1:1000 to 1:10,000 births.

This condition results from the presence of maternal antibodies against paternal platelet antigen (Human Placental Antigen, HPA-1a).

Cell-free DNA technology has revolutionized the field of prenatal diagnosis. Screening for certain fetal genetic abnormalities and other fetal genetic conditions is now possible through a maternal blood sample. Of particular interest is the diagnosis of zygosity in twins, which can be determined independently of ultrasound. Invasive testing is available at The Fetal Institute if the NIPT results suggest the need for further examination.
