Thoracoamniotic & Pericardioamniotic Shunts

Fetal and Neonatal Alloimmune Thrombocytopenia (NAIT or FNAIT), occurs in approximately 1:1000 to 1:10,000 births.

This condition results from the presence of maternal antibodies against paternal platelet antigen (Human Placental Antigen, HPA-1a).

Drainage of third-space fluid accumulation in the fetal chest can be life-saving for fetuses with pleural or pericardial effusions of lung cysts to guarantee normal fetal lung development. Our physicians have developed techniques that maximize the likelihood of a successful clinical outcome by minimizing the number of procedures required. The procedures are done in the Hospital in the main Operating Room, under maximum antiseptic technique.
