Thoracocentesis

Fetal and Neonatal Alloimmune Thrombocytopenia (NAIT or FNAIT), occurs in approximately 1:1000 to 1:10,000 births.

This condition results from the presence of maternal antibodies against paternal platelet antigen (Human Placental Antigen, HPA-1a).

Assessment of fetal thoracic fluid may be necessary under certain circumstances. The procedure is not intended for therapeutic purposes. Definitive treatment of fetal thoracic effusions is performed via thoracoamniotic shunts, also offered at The Fetal Institute.
